Unsafe, Weather-Damaged Deck Replacement in Kalamazoo, MI

Project Overview

A homeowner in Kalamazoo, Michigan, contacted Property Revolution Roofing and Decks because their existing wood deck had deteriorated over time and was no longer safe to use. The staircase was in especially poor condition, and years of exposure to Michigan rain, snow, moisture, and temperature changes had caused the wood to break down.

Our team removed the failing deck and rebuilt the structure with new lumber, improved water protection, reinforced framing connections, and a safer staircase.

The Problem: Trapped Moisture and Deteriorating Wood

The old deck had a carpet-like surface installed over the wood decking. Instead of allowing the structure to dry properly, the covering trapped moisture against the boards.

Over time, the trapped water accelerated deterioration beneath the surface. The damage was not limited to appearance—the decking and stairs had weakened enough to create a serious safety concern.

Water intrusion was also affecting the connection between the deck and the home. Addressing that area correctly was essential to reducing the risk of similar moisture-related damage after the replacement.

Our Deck Replacement Solution

We removed the old deck structure and the moisture-trapping carpet surface before beginning the rebuild.

A new ledger board was installed with Z-bar flashing. The flashing helps direct water away from the ledger connection instead of allowing moisture to collect behind the deck and contribute to wood decay.

We then framed the new deck using posts, beams, joist hangers, and torsion brackets. The reinforced connections were used to improve structural stability and help the deck withstand wind and changing Michigan weather conditions.

During the material inspection, our crew identified a split board in the delivery. Rather than installing a damaged piece, we had the supplier replace it before construction continued.

New Stairs and Safety Improvements

The original staircase was one of the most unsafe parts of the old deck, so the replacement included a completely new set of stairs.

We installed a graspable handrail along the staircase to provide better support while entering and leaving the deck. All exposed edges were sanded to create a smoother, more finished appearance and reduce rough surfaces.

A divider board was also installed between sections of decking. This created a cleaner transition and gave the completed deck a more intentional, finished layout.

The Result

The homeowner now has a rebuilt wood deck with stronger framing connections, improved water management, and a safer staircase.

By removing the moisture-trapping surface and installing Z-bar flashing at the ledger board, we addressed one of the primary causes of the original deck failure—not just the visible damage. The completed structure provides a safer and more dependable outdoor space designed for the demands of Michigan weather.
